How does a Homeopath know what potency and how often to take the remedies?
If you’ve ever peeked into the world of homeopathy and thought, “Wait… you’re telling me LESS is more?” welcome. You’re exactly where you need to be.
Because dosage and potency in homeopathy is where things get deliciously interesting. There are no rules, but there are so rules…
Let’s start with the part that tends to make skeptics raise an eyebrow so high it disappears into their hairline, the remedies are diluted. Quite a lot. Above 12c and you can’t actually see any of the original molecules if you look at the remedy under the microscope.
And yet… they work.
So what is potency?
In homeopathy, potency isn’t about strength in the conventional sense. It’s not “stronger = more intense effect” like a double espresso versus a single shot. It’s more like tuning into different frequencies.
A 6C remedy might work beautifully on something more physical, like nerve pain.
A 30C? That’s your classic go-to. It’s like the reliable friend who shows up with snacks and a plan. Great for acute situations but with a bit more depth.
Then you start getting into 200C, 1M… and beyond. Now we’re entering the realm of the deep, the chronic, the emotional layers, the “I’ve had this pattern since I was seven and I don’t know why” territory.
It’s less about force, and more about resonance.
And dosage?
Here’s where we gently release our inner “more is better” conditioning.
In homeopathy, we don’t keep taking a remedy just because we can. We take it until we feel better.
Did something shift?
Did symptoms ease?
Did your mood subtly lift?
Did your sleep deepen?
If yes, then we pause the remedy because the body got the support it needed for that symptom.
This is the part most people find wildly counterintuitive. You don’t keep poking the system once it’s already responding. That’s like ringing someone’s doorbell repeatedly after they’ve already opened the door. (Annoying. And unnecessary.)
Instead, we allow the body to do its thing. Homeopathy is less about doing more and more about not interrupting the intelligence already at work.
But what if nothing happens?
The million pound question.
If there’s no response, it doesn’t necessarily mean homeopathy “doesn’t work.” It usually means one of four things:
The remedy isn’t quite the right match
The potency isn’t quite right
The timing or repetition needs adjusting
There’s an obstacle to cure (a lifestyle factor that is not allowing the remedy to do it’s thing)
This is where it becomes more art than algorithm. You’re not just a list of symptoms. You’re a whole ecosystem. Your stress levels, your sleep, your history, your emotional landscape all matter. Two people can have identical migraines and need completely different remedies, potencies, and dosing strategies.
The beauty of precision
A well chosen remedy in the right potency and repetition doesn’t bulldoze symptoms into silence. It creates a shift which is sometimes subtle and sometimes profound.
You might notice:
A sense of calm where there was anxiety
Clarity where there was fog
Energy returning without force
Old patterns loosening their grip
It’s not dramatic in the way we’ve been taught to expect healing to be. As the founder of homeopathy, Samuel Hahnemann, said, it’s gentle, rapid and effective.
So where does that leave you?
Hopefully intrigued by the idea that healing doesn’t have to be loud to be powerful. That it might take a little while, but the change may be profound. That your body knows exactly what to do to be healthy with the right support.
