What is a homeopathic aggravation?

If you've been reading about homeopathy online, you've probably come across the term "homeopathic aggravation." It can sound alarming, especially if you're new to homeopathy.

The good news is that aggravations aren't something everyone experiences, and if they do occur, they're often mild and temporary.

Let's take a closer look.

What is a homeopathic aggravation?

A homeopathic aggravation is a temporary increase in your existing symptoms after taking a homeopathic remedy. Rather than creating entirely new symptoms, it usually involves the symptoms you already have becoming slightly more noticeable for a short period.

Not everyone experiences an aggravation. Many people begin to improve without noticing one at all.

Does an aggravation mean the remedy is working?

Not necessarily.

Some people improve steadily without any aggravation, while others may notice a brief increase in symptoms before they start to feel better. Every person responds differently, which is why it's important not to judge a remedy based on one single experience. One of Samuel Hahnemann's founding principles of homeopathy is that treatment should be rapid, gentle and permanent. Homeopathy isn't about making symptoms worse before they get better. The aim is to encourage the body's healing response in the gentlest way possible.

As a homeopath, I'm looking at the whole picture over time, your energy, mood, sleep, symptoms and overall wellbeing, not just whether symptoms briefly became stronger. The intention is to make the symptoms disappear.

What might an aggravation feel like?

If an aggravation does occur, it may look like:

  • Your existing symptoms temporarily becoming more noticeable.

  • Feeling a little more emotional for a short time.

  • A flare up that settles without continuing to worsen.

In many cases, these changes are mild and short-lived.

What should I do if I think I'm experiencing one?

The most important thing is don't panic.

Make a note of what you're experiencing, when it started, and how long it lasts. If we're working together, let me know so we can decide whether to wait, adjust your dosing, or review your case.

I always encourage my patients to stay in touch between appointments if they have questions or are unsure about their response to a remedy. Any change in your symptoms is valuable information and helps me understand how you're responding to the remedy.

Every person is unique

One of the reasons I love homeopathy is that there isn't a "one-size-fits-all" approach. Two people taking different remedies, or even the same remedy, may respond in completely different ways.

That's why your consultation is so important. We look at your individual symptom picture, monitor your progress carefully, and adjust your treatment based on how you respond.
