Why Inflammation Isn’t “One Remedy Fits All” in Homeopathy

Inflammation is one of those words we hear all the time now. Inflamed joints. Inflamed skin. Inflamed gut. Inflamed tendons. But while conventional medicine often focuses on where the inflammation is happening, homeopathy becomes very interested in how it’s happening and more importantly, why.

Because not all inflammation is the same.

Two people can walk into a clinic with a swollen ankle and need completely different remedies.

One person may feel stiff and achey, worse on first movement but better once they get going. Another may have red, hot, burning swelling that feels better with ice packs. Another may be bruised and sore after overdoing it physically. The body is telling different stories and homeopathy listens closely to those differences.

That’s why homeopaths ask so many questions!

Sometimes people are surprised when they come for help with inflammation and I ask things like:

  • What makes it better or worse?

  • Is it better from movement or rest?

  • Does it feel burning, bruised, throbbing, tearing or stiff?

  • Better from heat or cold?

  • Did it start after stress, grief, injury, illness or overuse?

  • What time of day is it worst?

  • How is your mood, sleep and energy?

  • Are you irritable and wanting to be left alone, or emotional and needing comfort?

These questions matter because in homeopathy, we don’t just prescribe for the diagnosis, we prescribe for the individual experience of the symptoms.

Here are five commonly used remedies that may come up for inflammation:

Arnica Montana

Probably the most famous remedy for injury and trauma. Arnica is often thought of when inflammation follows overexertion, impact, falls, long walks, exercise or strain. The area may feel bruised, sore and tender “as if beaten.” People often don’t want the painful area touched.

Rhus Toxicodendron

A classic remedy for stiffness and inflammation that improves with movement. Think of the person who feels very stiff getting up, but once they loosen up they actually feel better. Often associated with strains, sprains and overuse.

Bryonia

Almost the opposite of Rhus Tox. Bryonia symptoms are often worse from the slightest movement and better from complete rest and pressure. The inflammation may feel hot, swollen and painful, and the person may feel quite irritable.

Apis Mellifica

This remedy often comes to mind when there is puffiness, redness, heat and stinging or burning pains. Symptoms are typically better from cold applications and worse from warmth.

Ruta Graveolens

Often considered for tendon, ligament and deep injuries, particularly when there has been repetitive strain or overuse. Helpful where tissues feel strained, weak or injured from repetitive motion.

Final Thoughts

The important thing to remember is that homeopathy is highly individualised. Remedies are chosen based on the whole picture, not simply the label of “inflammation.”

Inflammation itself is not the enemy, it’s part of the body’s communication system. The real question is:  Why is the body inflamed in the first place, and what is it trying to say?

That’s where careful case taking and the right remedy can make all the difference.
